Writing for radio (and meetings, presentations…)

February 17, 2016 By Jackie

Get more good stuff.

“Short sentences are energetic.
They have punch.
Short sentences also offer clarity, one idea at a time.”

-Rob Rosenthal

I recently listened to How to Write for Radio, a podcast with radio writers and producers Rob Rosenthal and Alex Chadwick.

While you may not be writing for radio, you likely prepare your thoughts before presentations, meetings, and important conversations.

I want to share with you the first point from their discussion – Shorter is better.

In his manifesto, Alex says this:

“Write short sentences. People have short memories, and short attention spans. They can lose track of meaning if too many facts are crammed into one sentence.

Write for the ear. Think of others who write for the ear.

Preachers. Poets. Songwriters.

Radio writers can learn a lot from them.”

More periods. Less commas.

Crisp writing can help to make sure that you’re heard.
